Third grade students participate in Project Adventure

project ventureProject Adventure is a non-traditional Physical Education course which is a blend of low and high activities presented in a prescribed sequence, designed to take students beyond their own expectations or perceived willingness to try. Participation in the course builds confidence and trust and enhances the enjoyment of physical activity. The Project Adventure concept is characterized by an atmosphere that is fun, supportive, and challenging.

The learning goals are as follows:

1. To increase personal confidence.

2. To increase mutual support within a group.

3. To develop an increased level of agility and physical coordination.

4. To develop an increased joy in one';s physical self and in being with others.

5. To develop an increased familiarity and identification with the natural world.

Non-competitive games, group problem-solving initiatives, and ropes course events are the principle activities utilized to help individuals reach their goals. In all activities, participants are engaged in "Challenge by Choice", where no coercion is involved. A reasonable willingness to try is the criterion for success. The actual mastery of a particular event is not as important as the attempt itself. Project Adventure challenged students to go beyond their own perceived boundaries, to work with others to solve problems, and to experience success. A strengthened self-image emerges as students recognize that persistence is more valued than performance.
