What is Fundations®? Fundations® (K–5) is an engaging, evidence-based reading program grounded in the Science of Reading. Developed by Wilson Language Training®, it provides structured, daily instruction in key literacy skills:

  • Phonics & Word Study: Learning letter sounds, patterns, and spelling rules.

  • Handwriting: Developing clear letter formation and motor muscle memory.

  • Vocabulary & Fluency: Building reading confidence and comprehension.

Through consistent, step-by-step learning, Fundations helps all our elementary students thrive as strong, capable readers.

  • Throughout the year in kindergarten, students will learn:

    Letter Identification

    Blending sounds to read 

    Grade Level Trick Words

    Letter Sounds

    Segmenting sounds in a word

    Concept of Digraphs

    Letter Formation

    Manipulating sounds in a word

    Sentence Structure

  • Throughout the year in first grade, students will learn:

    Grade Level Trick Words

    Consonant Blends

    Segmenting and Blending up to 5 sounds

    Closed Syllable Rules (ck, bonus letters)

    R-Controlled Vowel Syllable

    V-e Syllable

    Glued Sounds (ex. An, am, , ing, ink)

    Vowel Team Syllable

    Syllabication of Multisyllabic Words

  • Throughout the year in second grade, students will learn:

    Grade Level Trick Words

    Reading and spelling words with 2 syllables

    Introduction of -le syllable

    Review of Closed, R-Controlled Vowel, Vowel Team, Open, V-e syllables

    Suffixes

    Fluency in reading

    Review of Glued Sounds

    Extensive study of Vowel Teams 

    Syllabication division rules

  • Throughout the year in third grade, students will learn:

    Homophones

    Spelling and reading of “c” and “g” as hard and soft sounds

    Silent letter sounds (ex. wr, gn, etc)

    Review of all syllable types

    Schwa

    Cursive Writing

    Review of all suffixes

    Syllable type exception rules

    Reading and writing multisyllabic words
